VPN error pls help debug

I'm having trouble with connecting via PPTP. here's the debug log from the server side.
The client side says error 619: just after trying to authenticate the user.

    did you define the user on the firewall?

    I'm not sure, but try removing the '.' from the name... 

    is there any more output in the log?

    I'd like it to use NT authentication, which it is set up to do against an Active Directory Domain Controller, that is why the name has the . in it.
    I also tried creating a local user on the astaro box simply named 'barry' Connecting with that user produced the same type of error.
    I'll try again today with a simple user name and post the full log.

    I made a new account without the . in it. and it worked.
    does that mean that I can't use domain list to authenticate users? This could get to be a logistical nightmare if I have to make totally seperate accounts for the VPN.
