UTM with hosted email and internal Exchange

Hi Everyone

since many years we are using an internal Exchange Server 2013 and MX record pointing to our public IP address. Our UTM SG210 has the SMTP proxy feature enabled and is receiving and sending emails. Everything is working perfectly!

However, we are planning to use an hosted email provider and then the MX record will point to the provider where all emails will be scanned for viruses, spam, etc. and then forwarded to our exchange server.

I am not really sure how to configure our UTM correctly for this scenario. Do I still need the SMTP proxy feature?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Greetings Aktuator

  • Normally, inbound emails go to the UTM where they are handled by the SMTP Proxy.  The Proxy then forwards the emails to the external server.  You might want to consult Basic Exchange setup with SMTP Proxy as it applies to other mail servers, too.  Your mail host needs to recognize your UTM as an Upstream Host.

If you want to have outbound emails also handled by the Proxy, your provider will need to designate your UTM's IP as a smart host.

You probably will need to have your email host disable some aspects of anti-spam.
