WAN-Bonding

Hey guys,

what do you think about the idea to BOND two (or more) lines. I speak about bonding NOT load balancing. pfSense (free community edition) is able to do that, why not Sophos?

The Prio 10 lines are only for fallback or multipath rules.

If you like the idea, vote for that at http://ideas.sophos.com/forums/17359-utm-formerly-asg-feature-requests/suggestions/17093170-wan-bonding

And I'm also curious about any answers here ;-).

  • Hi Manuel,

Bonding two WAN connection is only possible if you have a single ISP and it supports bonding.  Even if the feature is included, that will certainly require two ISP connection from a similar provider. Alongside, why not buy two separate ISP connections and load balance the traffic; which can prevent downtime when one of the ISP goes down.

    Thanks

  • Hi Sachin,

that's what I also thinked and knowed until a few months ago.

The diagram in my post is not a theoretical scenario. This is my momentary network configuration at home. pfSense is able to bond two lines of different ISPs without any need of support by them. See the speed rates of my two ISPs at the left side of the diagram and the values of the speedtest.net screenshot at the right ;-).

  • Hi Manuel,

Interesting to learn that, in that case I will do a brief research on this one and I totally support your feature request.

  • Manu, what tool do you use when you get that speed measurement?  What does http://www.speedtest.net give you?

  • Hi Bob,

the screenshot is from the speedtest.net website. I also checked, if the browser has any problem. At the moment I deactivate the eth port from UTM to pfSense (and then use the load balancing of the two prio 10 lines) I only get the speed of one of the lines ;-).

And I'm not the only one, that solved to bond the lines with pfSense. See here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FggkvJhz3Ls
