Using a fail over interface with the same IP

My company uses an SG230 UTM. Our IPS provides our main lease line over fibre, and a backup ADSL line which is only active while the main line has lost connection (it has no connection while the main line is connected).

I want to set up an automatic failover to the ADSL line, but with the same IP address as the main fibre line. Is this something that is possible to do or will the two interfaces need to always have different IP addresses?

  • Hello Josh,

there are ISPs that provide you with a Cisco-Router that has both external lines attached (Mainline: Fibre or whatever and Failover:ADSL, VDSL, etc.) AND give you an IP-network behind that router which is fixed, then.

So you don't need to care about the transfer-nets to your router, you just use the IP which ends up at your external (WAN) interface of the Sophos.

That's the most stable way to do it, because the Cisco does what is is built for: checking the best route and routing.

BTW: This does not need to cost a fortune, most professional ISPs do offer this kind of setup.
