Can Apple Airprint be made to work over a VPN?

I have a working SSL VPN using the Openvpn Connect IOS app.

When the VPN is active I can see the Airprinter's web admin page but IOS can't find the Airprinter (which it can do locally).

I presume that IOS does not have the capability to look outside of it's subnet.

Does anyone know of a routing solution?

  • After a bit of research it seems like this is not possible without some sort of dedicated proxy server.

Airprint uses a combination Bonjour and multicast, neither of which are up for traversing subnets. And, I don't believe there are any options within the UTM that can route around this issue.
