AP100 and AP55 in a mixed environment.

So we manage a large residence that we just installed two AP100s and four AP55s into.   Two AP55s are upstairs.  One AP55 is on the main floor and one in the basement.  The two AP100s are also on the main floor at each end with the AP55 in the middle to cover the gap.   The problem we are having is that any clients and devices that are in between the AP100s will always connect to one of the AP100s even though signal strength for the AP100s will be -70 dbi or worse, yet the AP55 will be at -45 or better for those devices.   Is it a behavior of the AP100s to have "preferential treatment" over any AP55 if they are mixed?  If this is the case we may need to take out the AP100s and install only AP55s in the home.   Thanks!

  • Wanted to add that we've tried dropping the TX/RX strength on the two AP100s down to as low as 50%.  Devices still want to connect to them instead of the full strength AP55 that is in the same room as the device.

  • Which Wireless Controller do you use?

Most likely the Client is responsible to choose a AP to connect.

Maybe the AP100 is still sending "to much" strength

  • UTM SG105 is controlling the wireless.

I assume as much that the client has to choose which AP to connect to but I just wondered if anyone here has seen similar issues when having an AP100 close to an AP55.  The only way I can get a client to connect to the AP55 in the same room is to disconnect both AP100s.

I can't drop the strength of the AP100s any further as they are needed to cover the rest of the floor.

  • Have you done some tests by dropping it further and seen if the coverage is still good?

If the coverage is insufficient then AP placement needs adjusting.
