Unable to Uninstall Sophos Endpoint 9.6.2 from a Mac

Question

I'm trying to update or uninstall Sophos endpoint 9.6.2 from a mac that has been missing updates for some time. 
 Sophos update just sits and 'prepares download' for long minutes before giving in, so we've moved onto uninstalling and reinstalling the latest version. 
 I've removed tamper protection, but when I try to use the 'remove sophos' app it reports uninstall failure immediately. 
 Can anyone with the benefit of experience advise how to manually uninstall?

 You can try to "cd" onto each path mentioned in the KB to see which one would work. 
 Also, if the Mac isn't communicating properly to Central it will be worth running the other script mentioned. 
 If nothing works, you can also try Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac: Removal tool .

 Try out the uninstall steps in the KB: Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac: How to install or uninstall using the terminal under "Managed by Sophos Central". 
 If that does not work, you can try running the script mentioned in this post to disable tamper protection, and try the uninstall command again from the KB I linked.
