Can't install some applications utilizing the Nullsoft installer: The file does not have an app associated with it for performing this action.

I'm running Windows 10 LTSC (which is based on Windows 1809) with all updates installed: Microsoft Windows Version 1809 (OS Build 17763.973). I'm running SandBoxie 5.33.1 - the application says it's the latest available version - no updates found.

I cannot install some applications which use the Nullsoft installer.

Sandboxie  is installed by default, nothing has been changed in its config.

Here's a sample application: https://www.hdtune.com/files/hdtune_255.exe

The errors are: The file does not have an app associated with it for performing this action. Please install an app or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Apps Settings page. Unable to execute file in the temporary directory. Setup aborted. Error 1223: The operation was canceled by the user.

The application can be installed directly without using SandBoxie. I'm a local administrator. UAC is off. I've verified that the installer unpacks a payload in the temporary location and it's a valid exe file though it doesn't have the usual extension (exe).

I've no idea what to do. Please fix this issue.

Here's the global settings section:

[GlobalSettings]

Template=WindowsRasMan
Template=WindowsLive
Template=OfficeLicensing

(Strangely I don't remember ever installing MS Office or Windows Live).

  • Are you starting your installer with the right-click evoked "Run Sandboxed" menu? Try to mark the checkbox  "Run as UAC Administrator"  at the very bottom there. That helps sometimes.

    FWIW ~ your posted sample application: https://www.hdtune.com/files/hdtune_255.exe in my new discrete default sandbox.

    FWIW ~ my GlobalSettings

  • I'm a local administrator and UAC is disabled completely. I don't know why I need to "run as administrator" anything at all.

    Also, I can't quite understand how I can "Run Sandboxed" and run "As administrator" simultaneously.

  • I can reproduce this error right now in a fully patched Windows 10 LTSC and the latest version of SandBoxie.

    As you can see in the picture I'm a local administrator. Windows 10 is running with default settings: nothing has been changed or modified aside from appearance. It takes literally 20 minutes to install this version of Windows in VirtualBox and reproduce this error. It's reproducible on raw hardware as well if you're thinking that maybe virtualization is to be blamed.

    It might be possible Windows 10 LTSC has some unusual defaults to make it more secure but I've been using it since 2016 (when it was called LTSB) and never had a single issue with any application.

    This topic is not solved. I've no idea who and why has marked it as such.

  • In my case this checkbox is enabled and greyed out which means I can't even clear it.

    Also I'm not sure why you keep posting the results of a different Windows 10 flavour.

    Again, the issue is reproducible under Windows 10 LTSC which is somewhat different from consumer Windows 10.

    oh jeez

    Maybe, there are Sandboxie users running Windows 10 that are interested.
    I'll remove my annoying (to you) content now.

    Maybe, you missed my FWIW.

    Thanks

  • Windows LTSC is the same as Windows 1809 which is/was a supported OS last time I checked. If the LTSC version is specifically not supported that must be reflected somewhere (even in the application itself).

    Also, LTSC is the Windows version which most corporations/large companies use and I'm quite sure SandBoxie has a lot of corporate customers. It's not a wise business decision not to support it.

    Please remove the SOLVED tag for this topic. It's not solved.

    You'll need to contact user that marked SOLVED.
    You'll need to contact Sophos regarding business decisions.
