Advisory: Bluescreen Bugcheck 0x3b (SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION) on Windows 10 version 1809 endpoints running a SafeGuard 8.10 file encryption module

Hi Everyone,

Sophos is currently investigating an internally discovered issue which can lead to a bluescreen (BSOD) on endpoints running a SafeGuard 8.10 file encryption module. 

The issue can occur when applying Windows Updates e.g. KB4464330 to an endpoint running Windows 10 version 1809.


This is known to happen when the following conditions are met:

  • At least one SafeGuard 8.10.0.323 (release version and also File Encryption Engine Build 19) file encryption module (File Encryption, Synchronized Encryption, Data Exchange or Cloud Storage) is installed, pure BitLocker clients and previous versions of SafeGuard are not affected.
  • The OS is Windows 10 version 1809 (Redstone 5) and you apply Windows updates. The issue does not occur with unpatched installations of Windows 10 version 1809.
