The removal of the ability to locate a mobile by SMS is a serious loss for me.

The Google device location method relies on mobile data, which you suggest I use instead, is inadequate since mobile data is often poor or absent, and to save battery life is often switched off.

Another company providing a similar feature also withdrew it at Google's command, but they now say that Google have allowed them back on Google Play with this feature re-enabled.

Have you asked recently, and would you like to ask again?  It's a really simple and useful emergency tool, particularly if one's health is poorly.
