cannot validate the logon user account against the domain controller

Having recently taken over the admin of our Sophos, there is a message on the VM hosting the SEC that

Sophos Enterprise Console (SEC) is not supported

Your SEC version 5.4.0 is not supported. Please update the SEC to the latest version 5.5.1.

 

Initially I tried to install version 5.5.1 but it failed and on further reading the upgrade path suggests upgrading to 5.4.1 first, which is what I am trying to do.

After dealing with the other requirements, I am left with one 'cannot validate the logon user account against the domain controller''

I have checked the AD on the domain controller does have the User Accounts Sophos Management and SophosUpdateMgr and they have the attributes recommended in your notes.

This is on Windows Server 2012 R2

What is the next step please?

    Initially I tried to install version 5.5.1 but it failed and on further reading the Sophos upgrade path suggests upgrading to 5.4.1 first, which is what I am trying to do.

    You asked dealing with the other requirements

    I am referring to the other System Property Checks. Initially when I ran 5.5.1 there were others it failed and I took the appropriate action.

    You asked cannot validate the logon user account, at which step do you get this message? 

    This is the only System Property Check that it fails on installing 5.4.1 and one of two it fails on 5.5.1 

    You asked The database is local or remote 

    As far as I know it was all installed on the local machine

    You asked the account with which you attempt to upgrade was taken over from the previous admin or is a new one

    I am logged in as the domain administrator account

    You asked do you know the SQL Server version in use

    According to programs and Features there are SQL Server 2012, 2014 & 2017 components installed

    Anyway, that you get two messages for 5.5.1 suggests that the database is remote (or at least the installer assumes it is). Please check the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Sophos\EE\Management Tools\DatabaseConnectionMS registry value.

    Can't say what's causing the validate error. Hm ...

    too long since I've played with the Database component, can't remember the details. Now indeed it's pointing to the local instance (and apparently this works). Nevertheless the prerequisite checker behaves as if it were a remote database. IIRC this is because the Database component doesn't appear to be installed (i.e. it's not under Programs and Features) - the Sophos_bootstrapper dd-mm-yyyy hh_mm_ss.log (in %ProgramData%\Sophos\Management Installer\) should confirm this. After 20 lines or so there's normally
    INFO : SEC Console detected.
    INFO : SEC Server detected.
    INFO : SEC Database detected.
    INFO : SUM detected.
    I assume it doesn't list the database. If so, please use the following command (assuming a 64bit OS) to install the missing component (note: it's not about files, database instance, or actual database but what the Windows Installer knows or doesn't know about this product):
    msiexec /i"C:\sec_540\ServerInstaller\Database64.msi" DATABASE_SERVERNAME="(local)\SOPHOS" DATABASE_USERNAME="SophosManagement" DATABASE_USERNAMEDOMAIN="Domain" INSTALLDIR="C:\Program Files (x86)\Sophos" CREATE_DATABASES=0
    The DATABASE_USERNAME and DATABASE_USERNAMEDOMAIN should be the values from the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Sophos\EE\Management Tools\DatabaseUser key.

    The same bootstrapper log should also give some hint regarding the validate error.

    So I followed your instructions to install the Database, which ran okay. However, when I ran the upgrade installer getting this error

    Hello Mark,

    looks like you've installed the database from the sec_541 directory and now it complains about different versions installed. It is not too hard to resolve, uninstall the just installed and reinstall from the sec_540 directory. BTW - it looks like the console component is also not installed.

    For the attempt that wasn't cancelled early there's
     : System Property Check: The logged on user must be able to connect to the domain controller in Active Directory - FAILED
    There's apparently some problem with this server and AD but I have no advice at the moment.
