Sophos Temp files filling drive?

I have a user who is complaining that his disk keeps filling up. In checking for what is eating the space we find a directory at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sophos Anti-Virus\Temp that is filled to the brim (11GB) with files ending in .$$$. These files range in size from 12MB to 2.8GB in size. I would like to know what these are and how to keep them from filling up this drive!

Thanks in advance!

  • HI,

They are temporary files uses by SAV when scanning particular files.  They can be removed safely but it's odd they are not getting removed automatically.  I can only think that a process is locking the files preventing SAV removing them.

I would suggest clearing them all, run for a while and see if they start to return,  if they do, run Process Monitor (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx), you should see SAVService.exe create them, maybe you'll then see some other process reading from them before SAV would typically delete them.

    Hope it helps.
