Preventing data leakage from internal sources

We currently use Sophos Enpoint Protection and a Sophos Email Appliance. We need to prevent the loss of sensitive Excel spreadsheets by external email addresses, dropbox, usb sticks, etc. What do we need to be able to do this?

Many thanks,

  • Hi,

You can use both Endpoint Protection and the Email Appliance to meet your requirements. My recommendation would be use the email appliance to monitor outbound email and the endpoint agenet to monitor transfers onto USB sticks.

In principal it is also possible to monitor, using the endpoint agent, transfers onto dropbox. This can be achieved by blocking access to the dropbox client using application control and then monitoring web uploads into the web browser. Uploads into the Dropbox web client will then be intercepted and scanned. The main limitation for this use case is that all uploads - whether they are to internal or external websites - will be scanned. The good news is that we are looking at adding dedicated functionality into the Endpoint DLP agent to scan transfers into services like DropBox made via their dedicated clients.

For more information on Endpoint DLP please refer to the policy setup guide (http://www.sophos.com/en-us/medialibrary/PDFs/manuals/sec_51_psgeng.pdf) and for the Email Appliance refer to the online help.
