Can't get mail appliance to see exchange.

We currently are in the process of installing a mail appliance and we have it set up but we do not see anything going to it.  We need to do something with the exchange server to make it work but no one can seem to tell us what we need to do to get the exchange server and the mail appliance to "talk".  Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

  • Hi Brandon,

During the install process you should have completed information in:

    Step 1: appliance config (REQUIRED)

configuration / routing / mail delivery servers  - normally this would be your exchange server.. This menu configures where you want the appliance to send mail FROM the internet to.

configuration / routing / mail domains - should contain the apporiate mail domains you accept mail from and should point to the apporiate exchange server

configuration / routing / internal mail hosts - the ip of exchange (or any ip that you wish the email appliance to accept mail destined TO the internet)

    Step 2 : dns configuration

You should have a MX record for your mail domain and an A record pointing to your forward facing firewall's external IP address

    Step 3: firewall configuration

The firewall should port forward 25 to the appliance and allow the appliance unfettered access out.

    Step 4: configure exchange

You will need to configure and anonymous RECEIVE connector in exchange.  This connector will have the ip/fqdn of the appliance and tells exchange to allow the applaince to relay mail from the internet to internal.

Than you will need to configure an anonymous SEND connector on exchange, This will tell exchange to route mail from the internal network destined for the internet, through the appliance.

There is more information from MS here:  you may need to look up similar articles depending on your version of exchange.

send connector to smart host: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj673059(v=exchg.160).aspx

recieve connector from smart host: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt668454(v=exchg.160).aspx
