How do I remove the SOPHOS SQL instance?

Hello,

I try to reiinstall SEC because of an update problem. So i uninstalled everything from the system controls options, and then deleted the SOPHOS folder in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server and restarted the computer. When I try to install SEC, it tries to connect to the already existing SOPHOS SQL instance, which won't work because I deleted the files.

I can't remove the instance, can somebody help me with that problem?

Thanks in advance!

  • Hello Markus W,

deleted the SOPHOS folder in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server
what made you think this is a good idea [:)]?

    I can't remove the instance
did you try or are you unsure how to di it? Normally you have the option to Repair or Uninstall an instance via Programs and Features. I'd choose the latter.

  • Thanks for your quick answer,

    1. This article says following:

Uninstalling SQL Server will not remove the database and log files.
For a default installation, go to C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.SOPHOS\MSSQL\.

If you are going to perform a fresh installation which will include re-installing Microsoft SQL server, move any existing Sophos database files e.g. SOPHOS51.mdf, SOPHOS51_log.ldf so that they do not conflict with the subsequent installation.

So I assumed deleting the whole folder could change something, cause after renaming those mdf and ldf files didn't change anything (SOPHOS was still there)

    2. I was also there, but didn't want do uninstall, since I thought that remove the SQL Server 2012 completely from the server (which I don't want, only the SOPHOS Instance). I can choose the features I want to remove, like: Database Engine Services, SQL Server Replication, SQL Client Connectivity (the latter is a "Shared Feature")

Is this the right way to do it?

  • Hi

Do you have a backup of the database?

  • Hi,

no, I don't have any. But since it's a test system, I don't need the old database.

  • Hello Markus,

if you want to uninstall and reinstall SEC it's normally not necessary to uninstall the SQL Server instance. I think you've misunderstood the Uninstalling SQL Server part, it doesn't refer to SEC's Database component but the SQL Server instance (and only after removing an instance you should move/delete its data files).

SQL Uninstall lets you choose the instance (do you have others?) to uninstall, naturally you want to keep the shared features and management tools.

  • Thank you QC, uninstalling worked for me (only ticked the Features below "SOPHOS")!
