Cannot deploy to client machines using Protect Computers - client grayed out with yellow down arrow, no errors or alerts and no activity on the client machine

Hi All

I have a frustrating issue when deploying to client machines. I right click the client, select Protect Computers go through the wizard and click finish. The egg timer appears for a split second, CPU on client moves briefly moves to 2 or 3% then nothing. Client is grayed out on the SEC and displays a yellow down arrow. I have performed the below in the troubleshooting the issue.

  • Firewall is off on the client for all connections
  • Task Scheduler service is Automatic
  • Windows Installation Service is Manual
  • Remote Registry service is Automatic.
  • I can connect from both server and client and browse Sophos Install shared folder from client.
  • All sophos services are running, i have rebooted the server as well. but still no joy.
  • This happened once before for about 3 or 4 hours and resolved itself, however this time it seems permanent.

Is there any place i can see logs for the attempted installation? Or if anyone knows of a solution or further trouble shooting steps that would be great.

Cheers

Steve

  • Hello Steve,

eventually there should be an error in SEC (though it might be an issue with the management server and then the state could seem frozen). But guess you've verified that the installation did not take place so please see these articles mentioning SophosInstTask for further troubleshooting steps. In addition the Task Scheduler GUI and the TaskScheduler Applications and Services Event log might have some information (but working with them isn't what I'd call a pleasant experience).

  • Hey

I've had this issue before, on the client you are trying to install Sophos on, open "My PC" , if network sharing is not enabled it will give you a message in a yellow ribbon on the top of the window, click on it it will prompt you to enable discovery and file sharing, enable it. and then try to protect the computer again. it will work hopefully.
