Sophos Management Service Not Starting - Upgrade DB Error - DBNETLIB ConnectionOpen

Hi There,

I had installed Sophos Enterprise Console Version 5.2.2 on my Server. Since this product is retired, I planned to Ugrade it to the latest version i.e. 5.4.

So I downloaded the SEC Setup version 5.4.............. I ran the following command " DataBackupRestore.exe -action=backup " reading the KB Articles on Sophos Website. It was completed successfully. Additionally I have backed up the ldf and mdf files as well to another location on the same server.

Then I Upgraded the SEC Server to 5.4, ever since then the Management Server wont start. Please check the below screenshot.

After checking reading some KB Articles, dont remember the article number, it asked me to run into the Windows Event Viewer wherein I saw it was some database upgrade failed error and it suggested me to read article KB113946. This article asked me to execute the upgrade db tool.

As per the article since I am upgrading from version 5.2 to 5.4, the following is applicable to my case so I ran the command.

" upgradedb.exe -debug -sourceVersion=521 "

So i stopped all the SQL Instances and executed the above command which generated the below error.

Can somebody please help me to resolve this error.

It says " Error - DBI Exception thrown [DBNETLIB] [ConnectionOpen <Connect<>>.]SQL Server do"

"Exit Code 5 (Failed to transfer data from the old database"

Hi,

The tool is required to connect to the SQL instance. Can you start the SQL instance and try running the command again.

Hello Samson Pacharne,

you could try to reset the new database (upgradeDB.exe -reset) and then re-run the command. Though it might be that there was a problem during installation or initialization of the new database. If upgradeDB still fails please see A fatal error occurred during the database upgrade .... While it is an older article I think it still applies.

Hello Everybody,

Thanks for all your help and support, the issue has been resolved by Sophos Tech Support.

I wonder how did the upgrade.exe run when he tried it, he typed in the same command and with same admin privileges and it worked.
