Sophos AV on OS X Yosemite(10.10.5) causing Network Slowdown

Hi All,

This is my first post here, so I hope I haven't asked something that has already been asked.

We have installed Sophos AV 9.2.9 on a Mac running Yosemite (10.10.5) and have encountered a problem with Network speeds.

We had a user experience slow connection speeds when navigating the internet. It seemed to be hit and miss as to how often this problem occurred. One day there would be no problem whatsoever, and on another day websites would take 5 minutes to load.

After investigating it seems that the local AV, Sophos, is causing the network speed problems. By turning off Live Protection & Web Protection checks the internet speeds improved dramatically.

I ran a Wireshark capture but couldn't see any checks that the AV was carrying out to a web service.

So this is my question to you is, is there a way to disable this across multiple Macs with a deployable script or similar? Or is there a certain URL i should be whitelisting? How can I reenable these checks but not have them impact the internet connectivity speeds?

Thanks for your time.

Best Regards

  • I am running Sophos Home 1.2.2 on a desktop and a Laptop both with 10.11.6 El Capitan.

The desktop is connected to the LAN which serves a variety of phones, ipads, laptops and iMac desktops - none of which are running Sophos

Everyone on the network is complaining of slow internet, webpage hangs and glacial page loads sometimes requiring the reload button to actually load a page after a warning.

    > Is it possible that Sophos is slowing down the entire network by affecting the Router/Modem in some way?
