Over the past months, we have seen an increased failure rate on RED 50 Remote Ethernet Devices, with a small group of customers reporting that their devices are no longer able to boot or have become inoperable.
Applies to the following Sophos product(s) and version(s)
RED 50 (Remote Ethernet Device) – both connected to SG UTM and XG Firewall (SFOS)
All RED 50 devices connected to an SG UTM running v9.6 or higher or XG (SFOS) running current RED firmware are affected. These versions of the RED 50 firmware incorrectly handle error correction between the hardware and system drivers which can cause RED 50 devices to fail in random ways which may include complete device failure requiring a hardware replacement. The occurrence of this failure is unrelated to the RED 50 hardware age and can impact both new and old devices equally. The updated firmware fix completely resolves the issue on RED 50 devices.
A new RED firmware is now available which includes a fix for this issue. This can now be installed by customers as follows:
9.7 MR2 (9.702)
9.6 MR6 (9.606)
RED firmware pattern 2.0.19
You should see a notification in the Web Admin informing you that the new version is available to install. Alternatively, you can manually download it here.
Install the UTM 9.7 Maintenance Release 2 (9.702) which includes the RED firmware update.
This update will require a system reboot.
If you are running UTM version 9.6, please update to the latest maintenance release 6 (9.606) which included the RED firmware update
Navigate to Backup and Firmware -> Pattern Updates
The RED firmware pattern update, 2.0.019, is available for you to install. If it does not show, click Update Pattern Now to show new pattern versions.
Applying this update will not require a full system reboot but all connected RED devices will be rebooted.
We are sending communications to all RED 50 customers and partners advising them to apply this update as soon as possible.
