This is a known issue which can confuse customers to think that their UTMs are out-of-date and are not updating. If the customer's UTM only has a few features enabled (i.e. only Basic Firewall is enabled and IPS/Web Filtering/etc. are disabled) and the Up2date configuration for Pattern Download/installation Interval is set to Manual, the following example will be seen in the UTM's Up2Date > Overview:
Current pattern version: 156727 Latest available pattern version: 157024
If the customer tries to update the patterns, nothing will happen and the Up2date logs will show that there are no updates. When using Manual pattern update interval, it will show the pattern version number of what it would be if all Up2date features are used.
If the Pattern Download/installation Interval is set to auto check, the following example will be seen in the UTM's Up2Date > Overview:
Current pattern version: 156727 Your patterns are up to date.
It is expected that pattern versions will not match up because it is dependent on what features are used (i.e. IPS, u2d or app control, etc.)
The following sections are covered:
Applies to the following Sophos products and versions Sophos UTM
The 6 digit pattern # is updated whenever any of the patterns that are tracked by pattern build server changes. This includes a variety of different patterns and not all of them are in use for every UTM. For instance, if there is a new Avira update, that pattern # is going to increment but if the UTM doesn't use Avira, it won't get that pattern.
This is by design and cannot be changed. Since there is no real side effect from this issue, this is included in the KIL (Known Issues List).
