APX wireless access points with firmware revision 2.1.1-3 and above will be supported by the Sophos XG Firewall. In order to add XG Firewall functionality to previous firmware revisions, APX series wireless access points will upgrade firmware to revision 2.1.1-3 or later as soon as APX wireless access point is connected to the Internet. The current process for registering the APX wireless access point to Sophos Central remains unchanged as long as the end user registers the APX access point as soon as it boots.
Applies to the following Sophos products and versions APX wireless access points with firmware revision 2.1.1-3 and above.
Under normal circumstances, if you register the APX wireless access point as soon as it is powered up, the access point will register to Sophos Central account before upgrading to the latest available firmware revision.
If however, you power up the APX wireless access point and do not select registration, then the APX wireless access point will upgrade to the latest image and reboot. After reboot its available for registering to user’s Central account. In this scenario there will one extra reboot and process would take up to five minutes to complete.
When an APX wireless access point is powered up, the APX access point will not appear in the XG Firewall. The APX access point will attempt to upgrade to the latest image which supports the XG Firewall and reboot. Following the reboot, the APX access point will appear on the XG Firewall adopting the access point.
Note: The functionality for APX wireless access point on XG is available from XG Firewall (SFOS) version 17.5 MR3.
Time to complete the APX access point firmware update is dependent on a number of factors including internet speed and bandwidth. However the process should normally complete in approximately five minutes.
An APX wireless access point running any of the following firmware images will automatically upgrade to the latest image i.e. 2.1.1-3, to enable management via the XG firewall:
Workaround for other versions
APX access points running an image other than those mentioned above, the user must create a trial account for Sophos Central and register the APX there. Once the APX is registered in Sophos Central, the user can initiate an image upgrade manually. Once the image upgrade is complete, the user should delete the APX from Sophos Central in order to manage it via XG Firewall.
