This article provides information on the retirement of SafeGuard LAN Crypt and its end-of-life on 30 September 2019. The following sections are covered:
Applies to the following Sophos products and versions SafeGuard LAN Crypt Client for PCSafeGuard LAN Crypt AdministrationSafeGuard LAN Crypt Client for Terminal Server
SafeGuard LAN Crypt is a product for transparent file encryption. It has been developed to enable confidential file exchange for groups of trusted users in large organizations.
In contrast to other file encryption products, SafeGuard LAN Crypt works without user interaction, supporting the role of a security officer who is also able to restrict the access rights of the system administrator by LAN Crypt-encrypted files. A master security officer can delegate the right to administer SafeGuard LAN Crypt. This way they can establish a hierarchy of security officers, which meets the security requirements of any company.
Every time a user moves a file into a trusted directory, the file is encrypted on their computer. And every time another trusted user in the same group reads the file from this directory, it is transferred to them in encrypted form. The file is only decrypted on its recipient’s computer. It may be modified there and encrypted again before being transferred back to the encrypted directory. Encrypted files are not assigned to individual users. Any user who has the correct key can access an encrypted file. This allows administrators to create logical user groups that are able to share encrypted files.
SafeGuard LAN Crypt will be retired as a Sophos product on 30 September 2019. This end-of-life date will mark the end of renewals, support, and maintenance for all versions and variants of LAN Crypt directly from Sophos.
Sophos is transitioning future development, maintenance, and support for LAN Crypt to the German encryption specialist conpal GmbH.
conpal GmbH are an encryption specialist based in Germany. They are a specialized manufacturer of IT security solutions with focus on encryption, endpoint security, authentication and Secure Identities.
conpal have obtained the rights to continue development, maintenance, support and marketing of their version of LAN Crypt. The product will be maintained and further developed. More information on their plans with LAN Crypt can be found on their website.
With the "Upgrade Release" conpal GmbH provide their first version of LAN Crypt, which will be made available to all existing customers as conpal LAN Crypt 3.97. The "Upgrade Release" replaces the last version of SafeGuard LAN Crypt Client 3.95.3 released by Sophos. Sophos clients can be migrated to conpal LAN Crypt.
Once conpal release the Upgrade Release, planned for mid-June 2019, Sophos customers will be able to migrate their Sophos support for Sophos SafeGuard LAN Crypt to conpal LAN Crypt at no additional cost. During the migration from Sophos SafeGuard LAN Crypt to conpal LAN Crypt, conpal GmbH will give support for both the Sophos version and the conpal version when needed, to customers with a valid maintenance contract. Sophos will stop selling SafeGuard LAN Crypt licenses as well as maintenance from that date onwards.
Customers with a valid Sophos SafeGuard LAN Crypt maintenance and support contract are eligible to migrate their Sophos SafeGuard LAN Crypt license to conpal LAN Crypt license with maintenance and support at no extra cost for the remainder of the applicable maintenance and support term, once the version of LAN Crypt developed by conpal is available. Check the conpal website for updates on this version. To migrate to conpal LAN Crypt, simply upgrade your existing Sophos SafeGuard LAN Crypt 3.95.3 clients to conpal LAN Crypt. Contact your Sophos partner, or contact conpal GmbH directly to obtain conpal LAN Crypt and transfer your maintenance to conpal GmbH.
As soon as you have migrated your LAN crypt to conpal GmbH, they will support you for both the new conpal LAN crypt clients as well as for your Sophos SafeGuard LAN Crypt clients.
Support and maintenance agreements that extend beyond 30 September 2019 will continue to be supported by Sophos until the expiry of such agreement. Once the version of LAN Crypt developed by conpal is available, such contract may be migrated upon customer request to conpal GmbH before the end of the contract, where it will be valid for the remainder of the term.
Up until the end-of-life date of 30 September 2019, customers can renew their maintenance contracts or purchase additional licenses from their normal Sophos partner. However, Sophos will limit all LAN Crypt maintenance renewals for existing customers to a maximum of 12 months per term, with a final end date of 30 September 2019. If conpal have released their version of LAN Crypt by the time of renewal, you can also renew directly at conpal or one of their partners, and migrate directly to conpal LAN Crypt.
Up until the the release of conpal LAN Crypt, but no later than the end-of-life date of 30 September 2019, existing LAN Crypt customers can purchase additional licenses from their normal Sophos partner. However, once conpal release conpal LAN Crypt, Sophos will stop selling additional seats. Additional and new licenses have to be obtained from conpal from that date onwards.
Once conpal release conpal LAN Crypt, or latest from 1 October 2019, no further purchase of Sophos LAN Crypt licenses will be possible. Once conpal have released their version of LAN Crypt, it will be available from conpal GmbH or one of their partners. Check the conpal GmbH website for contact details.
You can follow the standard procedures for requesting a termination of your contract.
