Throttling the download speed ensures quality of service (QoS) on your network. Quality of service is the ability to provide different priority to different applications, users, or data flows, or to guarantee a certain level of performance to a data flow.
In Sophos UTM version 9.1 and later, you have ability to throttle the download speed for various services and the interfaces.
In some cases it is necessary to throttle the download speed for some or all services. You can also configure if one or more interfaces are affected by QoS rules. If you want to limit bandwidth for certain applications, download throttling is a good choice.
This article describes how to configure download throttling on the UTM to maintain QoS.
Known to apply to the following Sophos product(s) and version(s) Sophos UTM
Operating systems 9.1 or higher
There are three main steps to creating QoS rules on the Sophos UTM. Create a new traffic selector, create a throttle rule and enable the rule.
NOTE: When determining the direction of traffic to control, keep in mind that all decisions are made from the UTM's view of the traffic. That is, a download for a client behind the UTM is an upload to a client from the UTM's point of view. Meanwhile to control traffic headed from a website to the the UTM's external IP is a download from the UTM's perspective.
Setup a new traffic selector. You can chose which Source, Service and Destination that should be affected by the download throttling.
Note: In the following example we have chosen any in every case. In a live system this rule would not make that much sense.
After creating a Traffic Selector you can step forward creating a New Download Throttling Rule. Here you can define what the download speed limit should be and which traffic selectors should be affected.
