"Wanna" ransomware outbreak. Please see this Sophos article sophos.com/kb/126733 for advice on how to protect your organization. Immediate action recommended.
This article explains how to uninstall the Sophos Control Center as previously used by Small Business customers. All instructions in this article should be completed on the computer with Sophos Control Center installed.
Sophos Control Center was retired in June 2014 and hence no longer supported. You should either upgrade to Enterprise Console or follow the instructions below to uninstall the software.
Important: This article is not designed to troubleshoot problematic uninstalls.
Applies to the following Sophos product(s) and version(s) Sophos Control Center
The Control Center software is now uninstalled, but you should continue with section two below to remove the unused Sophos Control Center database.
By default the Control Center uses a SQL Server instance called 'Sophos'. In order to correctly remove as much of the database component, you must determine if any other software (such as Sophos PureMessage for Microsoft Exchange) is sharing the same SQL Server instance.
If the SQL Server instance is only used by the Control Center you can remove the entire SQL Server instance. If the instance is shared by another program (like PureMessage) you should only 'drop' (delete) from the SQL Server instance the databases used by the Control Center.
sqlcmd -E -S .\sophos
select name from sysdatabases
You can ignore the 'master', 'tempdb', 'model', and 'msdb' databases (as these are not databases used by external programs). However if you see database names mentioning 'Savex...' you have PureMessage databases hosted in the instance. These databases may be left over after the removal of PureMessage (as designed to prevent data loss). However if you are still using PureMessage and decide to uninstall the entire SQL Server instance (option [B] below) you will break PureMessage. If you need to keep the SQL Server instance - because of other databases hosted by it - you should follow option [A] below to just drop (i.e., de-attach from the SQL Server instance) the databases associated with the Control Center.
Note: Even though you are uninstalling the Control Center we recommend you take a backup of the latest Sophos database in case you need to restore it later on, or access the data held in it.
drop database sophos4
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$SOPHOS\Data\
Microsoft SQL Server is now uninstalled.
