Microsoft's Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET) and Intercept

Issue

Both Intercept and Microsoft EMET helps prevent vulnerabilities in installed software from being exploited by malware and malicious processes. This is achieved with the help of security mitigation technologies, which function as special protections and obstacles that an exploit author must defeat to exploit software vulnerabilities. Due to the way that both solutions works, they cannot run alongside each other.  You may see BSOD or un-explained application crashes.

Workaround

Choose from

  • Disable Intercept Exploit Prevention features in policy so that Microsoft EMET deals with attempted exploits
  • Remove Microsoft EMET so that Intercept provides protection against exploits
  • Remove Intercept

Status

EMET will be listed as being not compatible with Intercept

  • I confirmed this by accident recently after installing Intercept on a system that already had EMET installed. The symptom I observed was that I could not launch any applications that I had configured to be protected by EMET -- which included multiple browsers & several Microsoft apps.
