Cloud Server - Hyper V licensing model

I currently have 2 Hyper-V hosts running a total of 5 Windows Server 2012R2 virtual machines. What is the correct way to protect the guest servers?

If I install Sophos Cloud Server on the host, are the VM's protected? Or am I required to purchase and install an additional Cloud Server license for each and every VM on the host?

  • I have the same question. Can anybody answer the this? What is the correct way to licence a Hyper-V host and its guest servers?

  • Hi Ben,

After much back and forth with Sophos and my local reseller/partner, the answer is thus:

    - Each Server VM requires an individual license if it has the Sophos Server AV software installed on it. There is no blanket license per host. Treat each VM as a licensed server. As of the time of my conversation there was no plan to launch a "blanket license" product that would cover all of the guest servers on host.

    - There was a Host/Guest licensing scheme for ESXi, but that is ending and it was targeted toward VDI environments.

    - There are NEW Sophos AV products being rolled out that may license differently. My post was about Sophos Cloud Server Advanced AV

    Hope this helps.
