Shouldn't copying the EICAR test string to the clipboard and then saving it to a file trigger a real-time protection hit? How do you test the installation if that doesn't work? Right-click scan gets a hit after all the above is done. However - copying the string to the clipboard is basically putting a "virus" into memory.
