How to install on a "clean" windows

Hello,

I've just tried to deploy Sophos Cloud at our office. All clients with an installed version of Sophos could be migrated to the cloud. But some new computers without any antivirus wouldn't install the Sophos cloud av. They're exiting with an unexpected error looking for a manged Sophos installation., giving errorcode 108.

I think I'm doing something the wrong way ?

Thanks

Schukaroi

  • Where are you seeing the 108 error?  Can you provide the log/screenshot etc. for context?

I know the UTM managed installer may fail with 108 because the Sophos Remote Management System is installed.  So using that maybe check Programs and Feature for that component (may be the anti-virus and autoupdate components are not listed but the RMS one is.

If RMS isn't listed as installed check for the folder (e.g., C:\Program Files (x86)\Sophos\Remote Management System) and the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Sophos for mentions of Remote Management System.

The Error was in the Sophos Endpoint Bootstrap_*.txt.

I've found some Sophos directory, but no entry in Programs and Features.

I "uninstalled" Sophos manually by doing the following:

    Locate and Delete the following:
            HKLM/Software/Sophos
            HKCU/Software/Sophos

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Soph

    os

HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Services – Locate Interchk, SAV, Sophos, and Sweep to remove
        Open My Computer.
Delete the following directories and files.
            C:\Program Files\Sophos
            C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sophos
C:\Windows\Temp (or C:\WinNT\Temp – Locate and remove any Sophos files

    Still getting Error 108

  • O hell, time to get my asbestos suit out after ... many years.
Please - never ever "uninstall" something managed by Windows Installer (or its equivalent on other platforms) by manually removing registey keys, files, folders, whatever. Who did teach you that? Why do you think the error is related to any of the items you've removed? Do you know what "managed installation" is referring to?
Sorry, but I really have to discourage any fiddling of this sort - if you're lucky, it just makes things worse ....

Did you try removing it using the Control Panel and there was some sort of problem?

Manually deleting components of the installation always causes problems.  Not sure what's left of the installation.  What's shown in the Windows services list?

    Example:

  • An automaitc uninstallation wasn't possible, because none of the Sophos products were listed under Programs and Funtcions.

There is no more Sophos service  in the Windows services list.

I used a registry cleaner severalt times and serched the registry for Sophos. After deleting a few hundred registry keys the installation was successful, but no updates were found. So I uninstalled (with the uninstaller) all Sophos products again, reboot, new installation and it runs.

I think next time I'll format the disk.

    Thanks for your help.
