Hard Drive Replacement

I had a hard drive crash on my iMac and had to replace it.  Everything was restored, but Sophos.  It will not work. The icon on the menue bar is greyed out with an "X" in it.  It will not uninstall so I can re-install.  Any help will be a great relief for me.

  • Hey Dave,

Sorry to hear about your hard drive woes.

Just curious, how are you trying to uninstall? You should be sure to use the Remove Sophos Antivirus App, which is normally located under the /Applications directory. If it's not there, you can download a copy from this article.

If that still doesn't work, you can try to remove the application manually. To do that, remove everything in the following list. Note: You'll need administrative rights to remove most of these files.

    /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus
    /Library/LaunchDaemos/com.sophos.*
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.sophos.*
    /Library/Preferences/com.sophos.*
    /Library/Logs/Sophos Anti-Virus.log
    /Applications/Sophos Anti-Virus.app
    /Applications/Sophos Remove.app
    /var/db/receipts/com.sophos.*

Then reboot, to ensure everything is cleared from memory too. Then run through the list again, to ensure you got everything.

Warning: Be cautious when deleting things in some of those directories. Not everything in there is related to our software - our files contain the name "Sophos".

Hopefully that gets you back up and running so you can install a fresh copy of SAV. But if you're still having trouble just let me know and I'll do my best to help.
