Sophos won't start

Turned on the Mac this morning, Sophos didn't start on boot and I tried starting it manually, popped up an error screen with nothing helpful. Tried rebooting, same result. OS X 10.9.5. Haven't done anything different in weeks, no new hardware/software. I really dont want to have to D/L and reinstall :( Any one else have this problem? Thanks

  • Hey Valamis,

Sorry to hear you're having trouble. Just to confirm: the error you're seeing is: The Sophos sheild is grayed out and say "Sophos Anti-Virus is not Running." Is that correct?

If that's the case, this, unfortunately, can be a pretty tricky issue to troubleshoot. I know you said you don't want to uninstall / reinstall, but that seems to be the easiest way I've found to get up and running again. Not the most elegant fix, but it seems to work.

One thing I should ask is: what version of SAV are you running?

The next thing to do is take a look at the logs:

    • Spotlight search "console"
    • Expand /Library/Logs
    • Click on Sophos Anti-virus.log

Hopefully that will give you some indication of what's failed or crashed. Feel free to post the logs here and I'll try my best to help.

  • Sophos ver. is 9.2.4.

There is *nothing* in my menu bar. Like I said, it doesn't even start. And of course it isn't listed in Activity Monitor either.

When I attempt to start it from the program itself, the error window says, "Check with the developer to make sure Sophos Anti-Virus works with this version of OS X."

With in that windows I could only find this text with the word 'error' in it....

    "Dyld Error Message:
    Library not loaded: /Library/Frameworks/SAVI.framework/Versions/A/SAVI
    Referenced from: /Library/Frameworks/SUMScanKit.framework/Versions/A/SUMScanKit
    Reason: image not found"

Only thing I can think of, is there may have been OS update the day before for I believe Safari & iTunes, but I could be wrong on the time....

  • Sounds pretty broken.

I'd definitely recommend uninstalling / reinstalling SAV to get things right.

Note: Make sure you use the "remove Sophos antivirus" application to uninstall. You should be able to find that in the "Applications" directory. But if it's not there you can grab a new copy from here.

After that you can download a fresh installer (you can get it here) and you should be able to reinstall without any issues.

Let me know if you have any questions!
