The problem began when Sophos Home Edition 9.2.2 would not auto-update, not would it manually update. I attempted to uninstall/reinstall, but the Remove Sophos Anti-virus app failed. I then used an app cleaner to remove Sophos Home Edition, but that also failed to solve the problem as I could not reinstall Sophos nor could I install Avast as an alternative. It now appears that I responded incorrectly to the app cleaner and have now lost my chance to remove it that way.
I have a one-line console log when I run Remove, which reads:

I am finding nothing on the net to help me unwind this problem.
The platform is a 20" iMac running OSX Yosemite. How do I get around this apparent Catch 22?
