Scan this mac will never complete ! / scanning a folder actually works?!

Hi,

I'm using SAV 9.0.3 with OSX 10.9 (Mavericks), I actually have this problem since installing a new SSD (500 GB) from Samsung. Since then I'm not anymore able to do a complete system scan, although I can successfully scan e.g. the documents folder. When I start a full scan (scan this mac) it will simply keep on showing the inital progress bar that in german says "Berechnung erfolgt...", in English something like "computing time needed". I let it run an entire night it a couple of days ago but it never got beyond this stage. After that I can't stop it anymore I have to close SAV with the task manager. Strange enough I can properly scan smaller folders.

I tried already to reinstall SAV on older versions, but this didn't actually help. Any ideas?

Initial thought: Disk Utility and a repair? Maybe the drive just needs a check, reboot and try again.

i ran the utility and repair. didn't help. still the same problem .do you have any other suggestion?

i tried with a reboot but it didn't help. thanks a lot for the link to the other threads.
then i tried this suggestion: sudo sweep / with the following result:
...
Could not open /usr/include/X11
Could not open /usr/lib/charset.alias
Could not open /usr/local/lib/libprl_sdk.dylib
Could not open /usr/share/locale/locale.alias
761926 files swept in 27 minutes and 48 seconds.
592 errors were encountered.
No viruses were discovered.
1 encrypted file was not checked.
Ending Sophos Anti-Virus.
the errors are basically files that sophos couldn't open. is this an issue or maybe the root of the problem?

It's good that sweep worked. Low-tech rules! :smileyhappy:

How about creating a custom scan in the GUI for just the /usr/ folder. As '592 errors were encountered' you obviously couldn't post all the locations. Hence maybe look back at the problematic files and try a custom GUI scan that targets just the folders with those files in them? See if that completes.

Also worth testing is creating a custom whole drive scan that excludes all external drives and doesn't scan compressed files (let me know if that needs more explanation).

hi thanks,
i have added a custom scan with the ui (/), its working. strange enough it takes 2.5 h to complete. when I run the same thing(?) using sweep (sudo sweep /) it takes only 1/2 hour...

Hello cesare,

is perhaps the Scan inside archives option checked in your custom scan? By default sweep does not scan inside archives (plase see sweep -h for the options and their defaults).

thanks. yes it was checked - now i understand the difference. i guess it makes sense to scan also the compressed files if somebody wants to do a thorough job - right?

I have a macbook pro running OS 10.8.5 and sophos 9.0.11
I tried the sudo sweep command and I get this:
Could not check /.DocumentRevisions-V100/.cs/ChunkStorage/0/0/0/19 (virus scan failed)
Don't know what this means.
