Sophos for Mac on-access scanning disabled.

Hello. I have Sophos for mac v 8.16c. For whatever reason, I was working and on-access scanning was randomly disabled. I went into the preferences and I can't re-enable on-access scanning, even with administrator privaleges. I have tried restarting my computer and reinstalling sophos,  but none of those fixed my issue. Can anybody help me with my problem?

I forgot to mention, I am running Mac OSX 10.8.4

  • Yes but SAV 9 is also concerned from what I read on Apple's site (as well as on this forum in the "Re: Sophos 9 causes Mavericks to freeze" conversation).

    Am I missing something ?

By the way, what is the very last version of SAV 9.x ? Because Apple mentions 9.1 and I am using 9.0.8 (the free version).

  • This forum thread is covering the on-access scanner being disabled and that can happen when you mix v8 with OS X 10.9 - support for 10.9 came with v9.0.4.  I think neichholtz's issue will be resolved by upgrading to v9 and neichholtz doesn't mention any other computer problems so hopefully an upgrade will fix it.

It's probably best to keep discussion on other topics (like freezing or crashing operating systems) to other threads and leave this one for when the on-access scanner can't be enabled.

BTW:  SAV for Mac Home Edition v9.0.8 is the latest (as of writing).  Version 9.1 is available under Sophos Cloud and will be available to Home Edition users in due course.

  • Having the same problem. All of a sudden it stopped doing the on access scanning. I removed the preferences. No go (both versions of each plist file, including the hidden versions). BTW, your uninstaller does a lousy job. Left files all over the place. Thank goodness I know where to go to remove all the files (or probably most of the files) - I have my hidden files set to be shown. Most of them.

I uninstalled and reinstalled. Still the gray icon. I'm running 10.7.5 and now v. 9 of Sophos.

I've updated the definitions and am currently scanning my system. There was a problem with the last scan and some corrupt files, according to the scan log, and I really don't know enough about Terminal to find it.

  • You could try running this in the AppleScript editor...

do shell script "launchctl unload -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.sophos.intercheck.plist" with administrator privileges

     Then reload it...

do shell script "launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.sophos.intercheck.plist" with administrator privileges

    And/or try a reboot.

  • iMac   21.5-inch, Late 2009    OSX  10.8.5  Sophos  9.2.2

"On-access scanning is disabled" appearing in greyed out type in the Sophos logo on top of my screen.

It's always worked fine till today.  I'm just a mac user, no idea about technicalities.  Can try to follow clear instructions

IS THERE A SERIOUS RISK OF VIRUS OR OTHER MALICIOUS SOFTWARE GETTING ACCESS TO MY MAC?

    any help most welcome

Very odd. Please check the Console.app and review the log file "/Library/Logs/Sophos Anti-Virus.log" and see if there is anything interesting written in there.
