Sophos for Mac on-access scanning disabled.

Hello. I have Sophos for mac v 8.16c. For whatever reason, I was working and on-access scanning was randomly disabled. I went into the preferences and I can't re-enable on-access scanning, even with administrator privaleges. I have tried restarting my computer and reinstalling sophos,  but none of those fixed my issue. Can anybody help me with my problem?

I forgot to mention, I am running Mac OSX 10.8.4

Odd indeed. Feel free to keep me up to date on progress and problems, either here in the forum or directly via email.

  • I have the same problem with Mac OS X and the latest version of the Sophos tool, have reinstalled it to no avail.

Re the response: "Have you tried trashing the Sophos preference plist files?" Where are these files please and what exactly are they called?

  • Hi,

Try deleting the following and rebooting. You will be prompted for the username and/or password of an administrator's account on the computer prior to deletion.

    <root>/Library/Preferences/com.sophos.sav.plist

    <root>/Library/Preferences/com.sophos.sav.plist.lockfile

    Hope this helps

  • Hi Calypso, thank you for the info. I found only the first of those two files, deleted it and rebooted, but no improvement. I'll review the other suggestion that involves using Terminal. Thanks anyway!

  • Did you upgrade from v8? We've heard a little bit about some v8 upgrades running into a kext bundle identifier caching issue. The recommendation is to run the command "sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions/" in Terminal, it seems to work for the one case we've been able to see directly.

If this works for you, please let us know. We are looking to introduce this into our installer directly.

  • Hello,

Yesterday my sophos on access scanning became disabled.  I cannot change anything in the preference since they are grayed out.  I have a MacBook Pro with Maverick OS X 10.9.2 and I am using Sophos Anti Virus version 8.0.23.  This is what the log says:

  • Maybe the result of that (from Apple's support pages).

OS X Mavericks: Sophos Anti-Virus on-access scanner versions 8.0 - 9.1 may cause unexpected restarts

    Symptoms

Sophos Anti-Virus on-access scanner versions 8.0 - 9.1 may cause OS X Mavericks to unexpectedly restart (kernel panic).

    Resolution

The on-access scanner feature of Sophos Anti-Virus versions 8.0 - 9.1 may cause OS X to stop responding and unexpectedly restart. If this happens, you are presented with an option to move related components of this application to the Trash. Doing this disables the on-access scanner software to prevent this issue from happening again.

For more information, contact the developer of Sophos Anti-Virus to see if an update is available that is compatible with the version of OS X you are using.

  • If you're running 10.9 you shouldn't use SAV v8.  Install v9.
