Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite, SAV Mac 9.2.2, and You

Hey everyone,

We released version 9.2.2 to all Home Edition endpoints earlier today, this version contains the latest updates and is compatible with Mac OS X 10.10. Although the previous version (9.1.5) was also compatible, this update brings the latest improvements and refinements.

We also posted a new installer to our website today as well. Visit www.sophos.com if you need a copy.

  • I've not seen the same (or any) drop-off in performance; but my internet connection isn't quite so impressive as yours.  Even so, I'm able to download at more than 80Mbps whether or not web protection is enabled.

I did notice that the CPU usage of the SophosWebIntelligence process rises to more than 50% when running speedtest.net's web app.  I'm not noticed such high usage before; but given the large number of complete requests/responses generated by this test I think this is in hindsight understandable.  If this were to rise any further I would expect to see a degredation in download performance.

I'm wondering whether your new Yosemite system is indexing itself, or doing something else CPU intensive?  Or, perhaps your machine isn't as powerful as the test system I used.  I would suggest you run another speedtest but this time check out your system CPU usage in Activity Monitor; in particular monitor the CPU usage of the SophosWebIntelligence and SophosScanD processes.

I would speculate that the high CPU usage you'll see from speedtest.net represents a worst-case for CPU consumption by these two Sophos processes.  I am curious to know whether you can download a single large file at full speed irrespective of whether web protection is enabled.

  • Dear Mr. Cook-

I've downloaded and am trying to use Sophos Antivirus for Mac version 9.2.2 on Yosemite without success.

My scan begins and then stops abruptly with only about 8% of my Mac mini's hard drive's scanned, but the "sweep hand" continues going 'round and 'round on the menu bar icon.

I've set version 9.2.2 up exactly the same way I've set the predecessor versions and I can't, for the life of me, find a fix.

    Help!

Can you have a look in the scan log and see if there is an error? Either right-click the white area of the scan window and view the log or to open the log(s) in Console see this thread...

  • Mine drops from 160MBs to 30-70 maximum. I've turned off web protection and the speed increases. I've now unistalled the product until this is fixed. It's been doing this since the Yosemite betas but it wasn't until I saw a post saying this was the culprit that I managed to resolve it.

  • As it turns out, I was my own worst enemy.

I finally figured out that a browser extension, ScriptBlock, was the cause of the havoc.

In other words, I brought it all on myself.

As soon as I deleted the extension, operation of Sophos Antivirus for Mac version 9.2.2 returned to normal.

Thanks to all for your support.

    Hi,

I tried numerous Speedtests, and the thing which stands out, is with the Sophos AV Web Protection modules on, there is a high CPU load of around 50-55% of the "Safari Networking" deamon. Flash is around 45%, rest nothing worthwhile.

When the modules are off, the Flash deamon is around 33%, and de Safari Networking deamon non-existend.

So there is a much higher CPU load from the Safari Networking deamon, with the Web Protection modules on.

However: the same issue persists when using Google Chrome. Exactly the same (speedcap). Under Activity Monitor other deamons show up (mostly Chrome Helper), but the CPU load is around 35%. Same speedcap as with Safari.

I'm looking for an App to measure troughput on my local (gigabit)network, to check the transfer of a large file, as you mentioned.

Btw, it is not the system itself, when not doing any speedtests, the CPU load is virtually 0% (1 maybe...). No indexing etc whatsoever.

  • I've had to cease using Sophos Antivirus for Mac; in fact, after repeatedly downloading and deleting, downloading and deleting, downloading and deleting, my scanning never went beyond 12% before simply stalling out and quitting, so...

...I've permanently purged it from my computer.

For the record, I've replaced Sophos with AVG Antivirus for Mac AND Bitdefender Virus Scanner for Mac, both free, and the both of them are performing the way Sophos Antivirus for Mac did when my Mac was running Mavericks.

I'm not the type of person who wants to figure out why a program like Sophos on Yosemite doesn't work; I want programs like AVG and Bitdefender that simply do work - period.

    Thanks, everyone,

For me, this issue is closed.

  • Hi Bob

    This doesn't work for me

    :1019857
  • I am greeted by  pop-up stating that Sophos isn't running on my 10.10.1 platform. Your posting refers to newly signed  installer, should I assume that I need to download & install the new installer? The SAV does seem to run normally when I manually request a scan.

    Thanks in advance

    Claude
