OS X 10.9 and AutoUpdate never finishes?

Hi everyone,

We are looking into a problem that has been reported, and wanted to ask how many other people see this issue as well.

Problem: AutoUpdate seems to never finish (the menu bar icon keeps flashing its "downloading" pattern) on Mac OS X 10.9 "Mavericks".

Resolution: restart the SophosAutoUpdate process; in many cases this "cures" the problem for a while although it might come back.

We are very interested to hear from you if its happening on your machine, how often it happens, and what else might be running on your machine when it happens. Thanks for any input you can provide.

    Not yet solved for me.

I run latest Mavericks (10.9.2) on iMac, running Sophos 9.0.8, Threat Detection Engine 3.50.1.

The problem began after upgrading/installing Mavericks, about 1 month ago. Have tried your solutions (reboot) and it persists. Have also tried stopping in Activity Monitor -- but an hour or day later it's there again (update arrow repeating, can't cancel update procedure... all the problems mentioned by others before).

Console shows that it's stopped at intercheck exclusions of my TimeMachine backup (stand-alone hd). It keeps repeating this message for hours, more than 5 times, more like a dozen before I do an intervention and reboot. Then it seems to update, but of course the "auto-update" cycle begins repeating its hangup all over again.

I've also tried changing frequency of update and eliminating my preference for excluding TimeMachine backup drive and then re-excluding it -- that hasn't helped either.

Hope this helps you solve this vexing bug.

  • Hi strumsky,

Can you send me your logs? Really like to understand what you are describing, sounds odd and different than the original issue. Also can you get a "sample" of the AutoUpdate process when it appears to be stuck? Go into Activity Monitor, find the SophosAutoUpdate process, and select "Sample Process" from the View menu.

  • Thanks, Bob, for addressing my situation. I'm still having trouble with auto-update hanging unless I reboot...

Hope this helps -- I did as you asked, and here is the "Sample Process" sent in full as attachment.

  • OS X Yosemite v10.10.3, SAV Home Edition 9.2.4, TDE v3.58.1, Thread Data: 5.13

Same symptoms, but quitting the SUM process doesn't fix anything. Reboots either...

    Went looking for SAVCFReadStreamRead...

  • If I leave Check for updates enabled then often when my iMac opens from sleep the update process starts and:

    1) Slows the system dramatically

    2) Takes several minutes

I have already unchecked the Check for updates on connection option. OSX 10.10.3, Sophos 9.2.4 fully updated

The only solution is to disable Check for updates and manually select Update now from the Menu Bar daily once the Mac is up and running. If I do this the update process is quick and does not slow the system down.  Less convenient of course.

In short there is an issue on updating on Startup or waking from sleep.

Thanks for the info. Can you tell me a little more about your computer setup? Something to check is disk bandwidth using Activity Monitor. In the Disk tab there is a "Data read/sec" and "Data written/sec" number, would be useful to know what those numbers look like when the update happens (my question is to determine whether it is CPU usage or disk usage that is slowing down the computer).

  • It just seems to get stuck at Updating for a few minutes. Sometimes its 2 mins, sometimes longer (almost hangs). If I update it manually it takes seconds. Did it just now on startup - not too bad but still a couple of minutes : read/sec 1.84Mb written/sec 1.45Mb

  • Bob,

On my MacBook Pro the Sophos Anti-Virus never updates. Attached screen captures below:

  • Having the same exact problem.  Came out of nowhere last week and will not resolve itself.  I even uninstalled Sophos and downloaded a fresh version.  Problem persists.

I have used Sophos AV for a few years with no issues at all until now.

Mid 2012 15" MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.10.4

I am enclosing a text file of the Sample from the hanging SophosAutoUpdate process.

    Thanks!
