Suddenly I need to Authenticate for every little Finder-Item scan ??

I'm on a late 2009 imac, running Snow Leopard.
3 or 4 days ago I realized I hadn't updated Sophos in awhile, but encountered the "can't connect to server" problem . .  followed online suggestions and reinstalled, ending-up on Sophos:
Home Edition version 9.2.4

Threat detection engine: 3.58.1

Threat data: 5.15

 . . . ok, fine . .  nice !
After seeing that every blessed scan of a Finder Item like a jpeg grabbed online now required Authentication, I started to figure I'd missed something in Preferences.
"Alright . . . lemme use Keychain Access and see if I'd already registered at this here forum here" . . .
But for the first time ever, my own Admin Password came back as invalid ?!?
What am I missing at what Root Level ?

  • Are you still having this issue?

Unfortunately I'm not exactly clear on where your problem lies, because you mentioend a few different things in your first post. I'm going to guess that you're mostly concerned with the scanner that's prompting you to authenticate whenever you try to run a scan, so I'm wondering:

Are you having this issue with on-demand or on-access scans? On demand is when you manually tell SAV to run a scan, vs on access, which automatically runs in the background whenever you access a file.

Based on the information I have, it sounds to me like the user account you used to install not have admin privledges. Do you maybe have more that one account on your mac? Could you possibly have installed using a non-admin account?

  • Thanks,

I was indeed on my own admin account, as always. As I mentioned, the reinstall was also an upgrade to "Home Edition version 9.2.4", which saw me skipping ahead at least 2 versions.

    I'm on Snow Leopard ( which I like just fine ! )

    What else ?  . . .

These scans are all items I drag from desktop to the app in the dock, like I've always done ! ( I do also have several "custom scans" which are run often, but that hasn't changed )

On-access scanning is off . . . following a suggestion I read months ago about how it bogs down everything, and which sure made a difference in getting things running normally again.

I see a whole bunch more Sophos processes running in Activity Monitor now, but the Sophos Server ( I believe ) is no longer one of `em.

And on the last restart a few hpurs ago, Sophos is suddenly missing from the toolbar.

    Darn ! . .  I answer 2 of your questions . . .  then come up with 1/2 a dozen more !!

    sorry !!

  • I know this probably isn't the answer you want to hear, but maybe it's worth doing an full uninstall, a reboot, and then a fresh install? Sounds like there's a few things that aren't working for you, so that might be the easiest solition.

If you decide to do this, you can follow these steps:

    1. Browse to this page and download a new copy of the installer (Click "Get Started" and follow the prompts)

    2.  Use the "Remove Sophos Antivirus" app to uninstall. You will find this in finder under Applications > Remove Sophos Antivirus

    3. Restart your Mac

    4. Double-click the install app you downloaded in step 1 (The file is called savosx_he_r)

    5. Follow the on-screen prompts until the install is complete

Hopefully that will get you back up and running, but if you have any questions don't hesitate to let us know!
