How do I know?

I am trying out Sophos Home Edition for Mac. Running OSX 10.10.3 (Yosemite) and Sophos version 9.2.4. My question is how do I know when it is active? I checked the box in Prefs to show the shield in the Menu Bar so it always appears there, but does the application shield in the Dock always have to be there for AV to be active or is that just for doing a scan of the hard drive? How often should I do a scan of the hard drive?

You don't need to keep the program open and/or showing in the dock. A black shield in the menu bar...

...means it's active.

If you want to test the protection there is the Eicar test virus. It's a test file that will trigger the on-access scanner and you can pretend to have a virus and clean it up. http://www.eicar.org/85-0-Download.html

You can run an on-demand scan whenever you like. Maybe once a week or once a month. Whatever suits your schedule as the computer has to be on.
