SophosScanD process consuming up to 95% CPU

Dear,

After downgrading my MacBook Pro from Mavericks back to Snow Leopard, I re-installed Sophos Free AV. It seems to work well, except that a SophosScanD process is almost constantly - with short intermittents - using up to 95% (on average, sometimes even more than that) CPU and heating up my machine. I have completely uninstalled and then re-installed the product, from your website, but it keeps happening.

Any ideas? Please let me know if you need more information.

Regards, Hans

  • Downgraded with SAV installed?  Hmmm, perhaps an edge case that isn't fully tested - not entirely sure.

It may be worth running the removal tool to uninstall Sophos...

    Then rebooting and reinstalling.

  • No, HD was formatted, everything re-installed. Tried un-install (with sophos uninstall tool) and re-install twice. No change. Sorry to be dropping SAV over this, see no other choice. The newest SAV doesn't seem to like Snow Leopard and/or v.v..

  • Also started experiencing this today, after many, many months of no problems.

Upon examining the SophosScanD process, it is using 90% to 100% CPU while running, and seems to be starting, running for 10 seconds and then terminating. Then a new SophosScanD process starts after 2 seconds, running for 10 seconds, ad infinitum.

Tried simultaneously disabling On-Access Scanning, Live Protection and both options for Web Protection, with no change.

The system is MacOSX 10.7.5, SAV 9.0.11 (Threat detection engine 3.51.0, Threat data 5.01).

  • I too have started experiencing this, it seems to have just started out of the blue as well.  I was not doing anything on my laptop and noticed that the fan suddenly started running a lot faster, I checked activity monitor and SophosScanD is using ~90% of my CPU.  It also seems to be starting, running high and then aborting itself.  As a result my regular CPU temp of 65 Celcius while under use has climbed to 75 Celcius while idling.  I have checked to make sure no scans are in progress as well as deactivating all scanning systems and see no improvement it seems there is no immediate fix short of uninstalling.

Same problem here on MacBook Pro (Mid 2010), OSX 10.9.4 :

The process "SophosScanD" starts, keeps running for ca. 10 secs with a CPU-load of 90%-100%, terminates and than a new process "SophosScanD" starts (new PID) again with the same behaviour.

If anyone has an idea how to stop this weired behaviour please let me know.

    Version 9.0.11

    Threat detection engine: 3.51.0

    Threat data: 5.01

  • Here too, exactly as for the user "gpr". CPU activity for SophosScanD process stays most of the time between 95-100%, and heats up my laptop.

Sophos Antivirus is active when it is not supposed to be. From Activity Monitor application I can see that a process name SophosScanD (root) takes about 90-100% CPU power, even it's supposed to be inactive:
    - on-access scanner is off
    - auto update "manual" (no automatical check)
    - live protection off
    - web protection off

I tried reinstalling but that does not change the problem. The only way to get rid of this CPU load is to uninstall Sophos Antivirus Free Home Edition application.

My system is OSX 10.6.8, Sophos Anti-Virus Vesrion 9.0.11, Threat detection engine 3.51.0, Threat data 5.01

  • Also I started having troubles this morning, which appear to be caused by SophosScanD. I was traveling and had to shut down computer (after troubleshooting), because my battery was near empty due to this process running!

Really annoying, any suggestions how this can be resolved?

  • Good news, it appears it has just randomly stopped after persisting for a few hours.  Would still like to have some answer as to why it occured for peace of mind sake though.

CPU Temp w/ SophosScanD: 77 Celcius
CPU Temp post SophosScanD: 53 Celcius (Within 30 seconds of it ending)

    Jesus.

  • Exactly the same thing here. It started yesterday night when i rebooted my mac, apparently stopped during the night and now it started again (i just woke it from sleep).

    I'm on a rMBP early-2013 and running OS X 10.9.4.

I also made a screenshot of the log window, hoping it helps:

P.S. I forgot to add that I am currently running SAV 9.0.11

  • Same thing here since this morning (Mon Sep 15, 2014) after Sophos updated itself.
