Sophos not detecting EICAR test file in ACE compressed format.

Hello,

I just downloaded the eicar.com test file in ACE format and Sophos did not detect it. Sophos did, however, detect all other compressed formats on that page.

The files were downloaded from the following page:

http://www.amtso.org/feature-settings-check-download-of-compressed-malware/

Does this lower the effectiveness of Sophos to protect my computer?

Thank you!

  • Hello,

ACE is a proprietary data compression archive file format and was popular around 1999–2001, when it provided slightly better compression than RAR, which has since become more popular.

Archive scanning in Sophos AV is more a convenience for the user. Once files from an archive are extracted, the on-access scanner would of course detect this EICAR as well.
