Version 9.5.2 Released Today

Hello everyone,

We just released Sophos Anti-Virus Home Edition version 9.5.2 to all users today. This version has been in "preview" status for a couple of months and we've had great feedback. Thanks to the people who installed the preview, we got more than seven thousand installs since its availability in early June.

You should see approximately a 30mb download followed by the update. As mentioned a long time ago, we do not support macOS 10.6 or 10.7 any longer, and the installation will fail. We do fully support macOS 10.8 and up, and this version should correct the updating issue seen on later versions of the Sierra 10.12 public beta builds.

Thanks for your support and let us know about issues you encounter.

Since my Mac was updated to 9.5.2 a lot of "SophosDignostic.gz" files are created in the log folder

Had this too. Finally I just removed Sophos (uninstall application in /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/Remove Sophos Anti-Virus.app ) and I downloaded also their uninstall application and ran that too (probably that is an overkill).

Then installed 9.2.8 (as offered by our University), updated, and everything is fine.

It's bizarre - not the first time Sophos got by itself in an unrecoverable state. Happy though that it works again.

  • I've noticed a few of those "SophosDignostic#.gz" too so I just added the Logs folder to the Excluded Items.

Update: Having excluded the Logs folder with the SophosDignostic#.gz" files in it as a test, I forced a TM backup. The first half took nearly 20 minutes. Immediately after turning Sophos off, TM flew through the second half in about one minute. So Sophos and TM backup time seem to be connected.

  • Same here with Time Machine now very slow since V9.5.2.

Both for a networked Time Capsule and USB3 attached drive.

Backups are MANY times faster with Sophos on-access scanner turned off.

Also, for many months now I've rarely been able to burn a DVD successfully with Sophos on. I haven't explored it thoroughly, as I also turn Time Machine off as well, and just get on with it. With just Time Machine off, DVD burning still fails. I haven't tried with only Sophos on-access scanning and/or auto-updating turned off.

To shed a little light on these SophosDiagnostics.gz files, some changes were made in 9.5 that introduced these as a dedicated location to log into, instead of writing to the system log. They are gzipped text files and they will take up a maximum of 100MB (that is 20 files of 5MB each). Further details are available in the files themselves.

  • I too am seeing the Time Machine slow down that others are seeing with 9.5.2. My Mac was away getting repaired and when it came back I noticed the slow down, I thought the repair was bad!

I had already excluded my Time Machine backup location from the on-access scanning but with 9.5.2 it just crawls. The only way to make Time Machine do its thing quickly is to disable on-access scanning.

Are you aware of this Bob?

  • Hello,

I have the exact same issue with time machine backups (on mac OS X 10.11.6 - sophos 9.5.2 for company). It currently takes 2hours to backup 2MBs with on-access scanning activated. Upon disabling it, 34GB are transferred in a matter of minutes. This is true backing up on networked time capsule or on networked NAS. The exclusions for the volumes are indeed activated but seem to be ignored.  Upon checking my activity monitor, I can see that the SophosScanD process is working (should not) but very slowly ... Could it be that the latest update of sophos is faulty and ignore the exclusions for networked volumed ?

The following image is from a network monitor : before the arrow, on-access checking is on and the down(red)/up(green)-load speeds are at 200kb/s max. After the arrow, on-access checking is off and the top speeds are of 20Mb/s !

    Best !

  • Update on the Time Machine issue: We are aware of it internally and working on getting a fix out. This thread will be updated once we have a release window.

    Thank you,

    Bob

  • Where can I download the latest Sophos Anti Virus for Mac (free edition for home use)?? Presumably v 9.5.2.

I do not want to use Sophos Home.

  • I too want that version NOT the Sophos home. I had downloaded sophos home for Mac and had to remove it - IT Totally messed up my time machine. After I removed it the time machine is working once again-UGH for Sophos free Home for MAC

  • A me-too: Trying to give someone a link to download the Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition, but only finding the Home (cloud) version. Is it still available anywhere?
