Can't update virus definitions

Still running Sophos Anti-virus for Mac Home Edition, both in High Sierra and Mojave. Starting last few days connecting to SophosAutoUpdate dci.sophosupd.net for latest virus definitions results in URL error "Could not contact primary server." I realize this particular A-V is no longer supported, however the following article at

support.home.sophos.com/.../360001340406-End-of-Support-for-older-Mac-versions is showing

"What does soft retirement mean?

Soft retirement means that there will be no software updates for Macs running macOS versions older than 10.13 (High Sierra), but they will still get virus definition updates."

So, at least as of May 19, 2021, virus definitions are continuing to be updated, is there any way to deal with this latest obstacle? Or is this now a complete dead end?

I realize that I can update to Sophos Home, but as it is browser based, not client, I am not interested. Just want to stay with the older, unsupported version, as long as it can receive definitions updates.

  • Sequence: hit shield in menubar showing X, allow connection to dci.sophosupd.net (Little Snitch), get "Could not contact primary server." Or, stalling  the connection (Little Snitch), get "Preparing download," which never finishes. Note: until quite recently was never asked to connect to dci.sophosupd.net. This URL seems to be responsible for the latest behavior, whereby definitions can not be updated.

Before I go ahead and just uninstall (Home Edition version 9.7.20), can someone from Sophos please reply?

EDIT: to that end, so that I might stop banging my head against the wall, can someone from Sophos please tell me if

    -there is some workaround

-whatever is causing this blockade of downloading definitions will eventually be relaxed

-there is/will be no solution, in which case i will just uninstall
