Sophos Home interfering with VMware Fusion virtual machines

I'm having a problem with Sophos Home for Mac (10.0.2a1 on Mojave) and VMware Fusion virtual machines. The symptom is that with Sophos real-time scanning enabled, the VM is slow to resume and after resuming, and there is about a 75% chance that it will time out and present the "machine is turned off" window, even though the VM is actually still running.

If I turn off Sophos real-time scanning then everything is fine and the VM is snappy.

So, need to exclude the virtual drives from scanning, right? I excluded both "/Users/userid/Documents/Virtual Machines.localized/" and "/Users/userid/Documents/Virtual Machines/, but that doesn't help.  My virtual machine is a subfolder of what I excluded.

Is there some reason why Sophos Home would interfere with VMware Fusion other than file access to the virtual drive (.vmdk) files? Why doesn't the folder exclusion work?
