Work laptop, personal portable drive = encrypted :(

My personal laptop died. I wanted to backup my files from it before reinstalling the operating system, so I plugged it into a e-sata drive mount and plugged that into my work laptop. Apparently the policies on my laptop are such that it immediately encrypted it.

How do I decrypt this drive so that I can reinstall it into my personal laptop and reinstall the OS?

  • I did find that option and it was disabled. I assumed it was due to a policy enforcing that our drives be encrypted. I honestly don't/didn't want to tie up company resources due to my stupidity (which I shouldn't have been using my work laptop in the first place (tsk, tsk)).

Ultimately, I backed up my important files and just blew away the partitions.
