Configuration Protection in Safeguard 6.1?

HI @all,

we installed 6.1 in a new Win2012R2 Server.

All seams to be ok - but we can not find the "configuration protection client"???

It's no longer Part of the "SGNClient_x64" installer file and the file "SGNCPClient_x64" does not exists in the "Client installies" directory.

Searched the Dokumentation but didn't find how to install CPClient.

Help! :-)

"SafeGuard Configuration Protection Module not longer Part of the SafeGuard Enterprise Client"

  • Hi Holger,

thank you, but i know the release notes - read them twice :-)

My question is - where can i get the Module? Is there an extra installer?

  • Did you read the statement ?

"SafeGuard Configuration Protection Module not longer Part of the SafeGuard Enterprise Client"

There is no Configuration Protection Module for 6.10.

  • This is ridiculous! Are we now saying that customer with CP licences that want to re-image and upgrade to windows 8 / 8.1 will not have the option to install configuration protection as of SGN 6.1 ?

I have upgraded our development environment today and it certainly looks this way, there is no option for CP in the sgn client installer nor is the CP installer available in the client installer directory.

Don't upgrade and keep the ability to install CP on Windows 7 clients and have no ability to deploy to Windows 8 clients or upgrade to 6.1 and loose the ability to deploy CP but gain the ability to support Windows 8 clients.

Even if CP has gone end of life because Sophos has fallen out with Safend/Wave, why wasn't the Ability to deploy CP built into the 6.1 installer to keep the many customers who have invested heavily in CP happy?

CP is still supported by the 6.1 management centre as the policies still exist to manage existing CP clients, just the ability to deploy with the 6.1 installers has been removed.

    Poor form Sophos !

  • Dear Holger,

    did you read my question?

Of course i read the Statment!

To tell me that is no longer Part of the SGE Client is no solution!

Do i have to use the Client from 6.0? Server Side 6.1 and Client files from 6.0?

    Is CP end of life?

  • OK we found the answer by calling the support...

    - dont use 6.1!

    - CP is EOL

    http://www.sophos.com/de-de/support/knowledgebase/119350.aspx

CP is supported till 30.04.2015 - our license goes till 31.12.2015 (3500clients!)

we will have a meeting with our sales man from sophos.

till yesterday i was a fan from sophos and its products, but now i'm really disappointed. :-(

  • SafeGuard Configuration Protection clients version 6.0 can continue be managed by a SGN 6.1 backend. Therefore Windows 8 clients can be supported in parallel to such clients.

However, there is no Configuration Protection for Windows 8 clients as the product is discontinued.

So, all clients requiring Configuration Protection need to remain on client version SGN 6.0. The backend can be upgraded to SGN 6.1, which will support clients down to version 5.60 as well as Windows 8 and 8.1 and Mac clients.

  • The question now being; what is the replacement for CP on Windows 8/8.1?

    And why was CP pulled?

    :47267
  • Sophos Device Control can be used alternatively if the available functionality covers your needs.

If you want to continue using the same full CP functionality for Windows 8, the only option is to approach our partner Safend directly. They do have a Windows 8 product (Port Protector) providing this functionality. Obviously this functionality is then managed by a different console.

As for the why, Sophos as any other company needs to review product strategy every now and then and re-focus on the areas, which we think we can add value to our customers and to our shareholders. Re-focussing is difficult to impossible if a company continues to carry all legacy products into the future. During this process we decided to discontinue CP.

  • Safend was bought out by Wave, this this was around the time that Sophos announced that it would be discontinuing Configuration Protection in Safeguard.  Port Protector from Safend/Wave is from what I can see CP in Safeguard only re-badged as is the Port Auditor tool.

We have 2500 CP licences which when we upgrade to Safeguard 6.1 we can no longer use, we may be able to manage 6.0 clients that are already deployed, but we also need to deploy 500+ Windows 8.1 devices for mobile workers.  Our strategy is to stick with Windows 7 for desktops, so how do we continue to INSTALL CP and use the licences we have on Windows 7 desktops/laptops and also deploy Windows 8.1 without CP.

The short of it is we cannot as, the ability to even install CP for any client be it Windows 95 or 8.1 has been omitted from the installer!

"As for the why, Sophos as any other company needs to review product strategy every now and then and re-focus on the areas, which we think we can add value to our customers and to our shareholders"

Your comment above simply makes me believe further that Sophos's strategy is more about saving money for shareholders than about delivering features for customers.  Not only does Safeguard only manage Bitlocker (no hard work gone into development here), Sophos have now removed an entire Module from Safeguard, probably because WAVE wanted more money per license than Safened previously did.

I don't know who at Sophos thought that it was acceptable to remove CP from Safeguard and replace it with thin air, I would love to have them for tea at my house because I would probably get away with serving them a nice Beef Sunday Roast with no Beef on their plate!

"Re-focussing is difficult to impossible if a company continues to carry all legacy products into the future. During this process we decided to discontinue CP."

And let’’’’s get the above quote absolutely clear, CP has not been re-focussed its simply been REMOVED!

Oh and its not a "legacy" product for Wave as Port Protector support Windows 8, its only legacy because Sophos want to pull it.
