Can I remove/reinstall encrypted hard drive?

I have a laptop running Sophos Safeguard 5.50.

I would like to remove the harddrive and install a new harddrive, and install WIndows 7 without Sophos.

Question: Later, if I re-insert the original Sophos-protected harddrive, will it still boot up and function as it was before?

Thanks,

Mike

  • Hi Mike,

I understood that you run one disk at a time, so swapping the harddrives should not impact the disk with the SafeGuard installation.

When you change any BIOS settings (i.e. S-ATA operation modes etc) that might be required for the new installation, keep in mind that you swap those back to the original values if you put the original disk into the machine again.

    Regards,

  • I have a DELL E7240 Laptop which has motherboard problems.  DELL is provided a replacement laptop.  Can I take the full disk encrypted SSD out of one laptop and put it into the replacement laptop?  I use SafeGuard Managemt Center and the device is encrypted using ver 6.00.1.31.

    Thanks

  • Yes - If you have used volume based encryption with Sophos Safeguard the method of decrypting the drive will be entirely based on the HDD and so can be moved and mounted as you see fit.

Encryption like bitlocker will store the decryption keys on the TPM chip on the motherboard which is why with those devices you run into problems.
