Where I stand now: boot\bcd error

I'm actually further back in the recovery period than previously reported; I don't get the BSOD anymore, I get a boot\bcd failure.

I have attempted to repair the problem in accordance with another post here, but have met with failure.

I am actually using a 5.60 Win PE disc even though my machine has 5.50 (116) installed; this disk is the only one I could find that had the bootrec utility embedded.  If I have made a serious error here, please advise.

But the clearly described fix doesn't seem to work.  Here's what happens:

* boot to WinPE after the POA authentication
* confirm that data on drive C is accessible
* open command prompt
* navigate to C:\boot * run command: bootrec /fixmbr. Expected outcome: "The operation completed successfully."
* run command: bootsect /nt60 all /force. Expected outcome: "Target volumes will be updated with BOOTMGR compatible bootcode. (...) Bootcode was successfully updated on all targeted volumes".

Everything works up to this point.

* run command: del C:\boot\bcd /p. Expected outcome: Delete (Y/N)Fi
* select Yes(Y)
* press Enter

File not found.

* run command: bootrec /rebuildbcd. Expected outcome: "(...) Successfully scanned Windows installations: 1 Add installation to boot list? Yes(Y)/No(N)/All(A):"
* select 'Yes(Y). Expected outcome: "The operation completed successfully."

The Windows 7 partition is found (Partition D:) but when i respond Y, I get the error message: "The requested system device can not be found."

* press Enter
* remove WinPE
* restart
* test - boot from the hard drive

Clearly the fix does not take hold.

Any kind words of advice?

Norm

  • Hello DoctorNorm,

    many thanks for your forum post.

    Only the 5.60 WinPE is having the bootrec utility embedded and it has not officially been tested with running in on a different version then 5.60.

    Please get in touch with Sophos support to get a modified version for 5.50.0.116.

    Regards,

    Tim
