Safeguard Enterprise Client V5.50 crash on virual Machine (HYPER-V)

Hello,

I am  using Windows 2008 R2 with Hyper-V enabled.

I installed SGN server on Windows 2008 R2 and it worked fine.

Then I installed SGN 5.50 client with Volume encryption enabled on a GUEST WIN XP SP3  machine and it crashed after rebooting. . This is what I am getting after rebooting:

Sophos Safeguard is starting

Please Wait...

Invalid Slice

No/ Boot Loader

I am not sure if it is supported on Hyper-V but if you follow this link it is supported on VMware.

Any help will be appreciated.

  • Well this happened to me today on a physical box. Anyone?

  • Hi all,

thank you very much for reporting this. Even though the result was the same in both cases you have to separate between a physical box and a virtual machine.

With regards to the virtual box please be so kind and check if the hard drive was configured as SCSi drive - this is something that can cause the boot to fail as we don't supper SCSI at this point (but VM offers to create SCSI drives as default afaik).

Second for the physical box: please try all hot keys that are available (http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/article/107781.html ) and if that still fails then please raise a new support call -  when doing so please provide a MSInfo32 saved as NFO as this will speed up things right from the beginning.

    Regards

    Dan

  • I'm also having the problem.  I've toggle ever F* possible with no success.  My configuration is 2008R2 HyperV server with a XP SP3 VM (2048MB RAM, 20GB IDE HDD) with SGE 6.00 installed.  Encryption is disabled POA is disabled (using Windows authentication).  No success.  Exact VM configuration using VMWare or VirtualBox both work.

I get the same error as the initial poster.

  • Hi MGH_Security,

the SafeGuard Enterprise Device Encryption Client Kernel / Power-On Authentication is based on a hardened version of FreeBSD 6.1, which has unfortunately no support for Hyper-V.

As you've mentioned, running the SafeGuard Enterprise Client on VMWare or Virtual Box is not a problem.

  • ChrisD,

Has there been any advances in encrypting a Hyper-V VM with SafeGuard?  I've tried multiple varieties being pushed from the Enterprise Console 5.2 R2? I think I'm on (latest release as of a couple weeks ago).  I'm getting the same Invalid Slice & No /boot/loader error.  This is only for testing so if there's any sort of Beta or anything available I'd love to try it.  However, if the issue is strictly that the BSD version won't boot on Hyper-V, I understand the issue isn't technically tied just to Sophos.

    Thanks,

    Glenn

  • Hello Sir,

Has this issue been fixed in the latest release  Safequard Enterprise (6.1)?

    Thanks.

still applies for the the Device Encryption module of SafeGuard Enterprise 6.10 (or integrated encryption Client in SEC 5.2). The BitLocker module from SafeGuard 6.x can be installed without any problem in a Hyper-V environment.
