Sophos shield

I have two queries with Sophos.  First, despite setting it all correctly, and checking the box, it does NOT automatically update on start-up.  I have to do it manually.

Secondly, when Sophos is updating, the little green "wiggles" do NOT appear in the shield on the screen edge bar.  How do I make this happen?

  • Hi,

    Since version 9, the shield icon no longer animates to indicate that an update is taking place.  I assume these are the wiggles you refer to?

    The first update used to happen a short while after the AutoUpdate service started (alsvc.exe), either 30 seconds or a minute, I can't remember off the top of my head.  This also was extended to 5 minutes but can be changed with the reg key:

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Sophos\AutoUpdate\StartupDelay
    where StartupDelay should be a DWORD value, which sets the number of seconds before the service starts an update.
    E.g.
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sophos\AutoUpdate]
    "StartupDelay"=dword:0000000a
    Would be a 10 seconds delay in checking for an update after the Sophos AutoUpdate Service starts.

    To test this delay, if you restart the AutoUpdate service, you should see alsvc.exe spawn alupdate.exe in task manager.  The Alupdate.exe process is evidence of an update check/update taking place.
